Comparing Objectives

The goal of the "Wild Robots" project is to research inventions and innovations that stem from biomimicry and design their own invention using what they have learned.  Biomimicry is the idea that scientists use nature as their basis to create a new invention or innovation.  This project fits with the third grade Baltimore County English/ Language Arts curriculum, which has been designed based off of Common Core State Standards.  Unit 3 focuses on inventions and innovations with one sub-unit specifically focusing on biomimicry.  After reading and researching about these inventions and innovations that scientists created, students will plan and design a model robot, which connects to the third grade STEM standards.  Students will also be collaborating with their peers, which fits into the P21 standards that Baltimore County has adopted.

  • Identify and describe physical features of two environments

  • Synthesize information from multiple sources

  • Select animal features that assist with mobility in selected terrain

  • Apply biomimicry concepts in a robot design

  • Create diagrams in planning robot models

  • Ask questions and offer constructive feedback to extend learning and conversation

  • Learn and develop strategies for effective communication with a global audience

1. Learn and Apply Rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Content STEM proficient students will learn and apply rigorous content within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions for challenges and real world problems.

          a) Demonstrate an understanding of science, technology, engineering,

              and mathematics content.
          b) Apply science, technology, engineering, or mathematics content to

answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to

develop solutions for challenges and real world problems.

RI.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

RI.3.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.

RI.3.5: Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently.

RI.3.7: Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Analyze how parts of the whole interact to produce outcomes in a complex system.

Communication and Collaboration: Articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms and contexts.

Productivity and Accountability: Participate actively. Communicate and collaborate effectively with teams.
